Homemade Sausage Rolls Recipe
What’s nicer than hot Home- Made Sausage Rolls dipped in tomato sauce at a kids or adult party? These rolls are easy to make ahead of the party and taste so good they just disappear off the plate.
Ingredients
750grams (1 ½ lb) sausage meat (mince)
1 large onion, finely chopped
½ teaspoon dried mixed herbs
4 slices frozen white toast bread
Warm water
4 sheets flaky puff pastry
Freshly ground salt and pepper
Egg Coating:
1 egg yoke
1 tablespoon cold water
In a bowl place the sausage meat, onion, mixed herbs, slat and freshly ground pepper. Cut crusts from the frozen bread and place just the bread into a blender till finely crumbed. Using the frozen bread helps bind the bread in the mixture. Add bread to sausage mixture and mix well. Place sausage mixture along the edge of a pastry sheet about 1-1 ¼” thick. Turn the edge of pastry over the filling so the filling is completely covered.
Cut along the edge of the pastry with a sharp knife. Continue with the remaining filling and pastry. Brush rolls with beaten egg yoke and water coating and put 2 prick marks into the pastry with a sharp knife and then cut into approximately 2” size rolls.
Preheat oven to 200ºc or 400ºF and place rolls on a greased tray for 10 minutes, then reduce temperature to 180ºc for a further 10-15 minutes, until cooked a light golden but not a brown colour.
Serve warm to hot on a serving plate with a small bowl of spicy tomato sauce to compliment the rolls.
Handy Hints: Cooked Homemade Sausage Rolls freeze well in an air tight container for several weeks. It is very handy to have some ready and in the freezer for the unexpected visitors that pop in! It impresses your friends when in 10-15 minutes you can have sausage rolls hot out of the oven. When heating from frozen preheat oven to 160ºc and be careful not to over cook the rolls.
